First floor book nook - book levels 1 thru 28
Second floor book nook - book levels 30 - 70. (From the back stairs, go up, turn left, the closet is in an open area at the end of the hall. It is labeled as Storage.)
Coordinate with your assigned teacher(s)/grade(s) on book pick up, date, time, frequency, etc. Pick up books from outside the classroom(s). In the book nook, pile books in order by reading level and then put away each pile in their respective level boxes, in alphabetical order, behind their respective place holder card.
Best method is via email. Initial communications should include day(s) you can come in, frequency needed, time frame, and where to pick up the books. (Ex. I come every other Friday, any time between 12-1, and I ask that books be left outside of the teachers door.) You may also want to send a reminder email the day before, to confirm that nothing has changed and the books will be ready.
Book title will be in BOLD and is what is used for the alphabetical sorting.
DRA is the reading level.
# of copies represents how many books are supposed to be in that bag (do not worry if some are missing).
Set: represents multiple groups of the same books. (ex. Set A, B, C)
The books are organized by reading level (DRA) and alphabetically.
A blue/gray card with the book info serves as a place holder and the book bags are to be inserted behind it. (card - bag - card - bag - etc) NEVER REMOVE THE CARD (unless it is in the wrong place, of course).
Some books have multiple sets, so be aware when the label includes a Set identification; Set A, B, C, etc.
If a random/late book is returned without its bag, look for the book nook label on the back of the book, determine the level, and find its proper home.
Some books are not labeled and may have a different box, such as the aforementioned. SRP is based on level and are typically not in any alphabetical order, they just go in the proper level box with other SRP books.
It may take time, but if you cannot find any book nook label, it might go in one of these alternative boxes.
Labels were made over time, by multiple parties, and are sometimes not consistent. Some books will be sorted by the very first word of the title (such as ‘A’ or ‘The’), and sometimes you’ll find them sorted by the second word. Best bet is to start with exactly how the bolded title is listed on the label. (Ex, “A Whale” vs “Whale, A”).
If you cannot locate the placeholder starting with the first word/letter, then try looking at the second word. If no placeholder is found, try looking around as sometimes they fall to the floor or are randomly put back in the wrong order by mistake.
As the teachers check out books, they are supposed to use assigned clothespins with their room number to represent their choices. As you return the books, please remove the clothespins from the place holder cards and return them to the proper classroom box in the book nook.
At times, teachers run out of clothespins, or forget to use them. Do not be alarmed when/if you find no clothespins.
At times, teachers trade books and you will find someone else’s clothespin. If the bag is returned, please still remove and put away the clothespin accordingly.
This chart can be found behind the doors of the book nook should you need it.
Usually, teachers will pull their own books and we just focus on putting them back. Occasionally, you may be asked to pull a list of various books. If so, you may need to know the category of a book selection. This information is also taped up in the nooks.
